Construct 1, 2016

Construct 1 is a live durational performance exploring Laura’s research into the construction of gender and the performativity of womanliness. Through the repetitive act of binding high heels to her body in frenzied, manic bursts, Laura interrogates societal notions of sexiness and the discomfort associated with them. The process conceals the original form of the heels, replacing them with artificial, plastic-like growths, transforming the artist into a hyper-extended, living sculpture.

The act of taping produces an intense, rhythmic soundscape, resonating within the moment of performance. Once unbound, the wrapped heels are left in the exhibition space as remnants of the act. These objects transcend their origins to exist as independent sculptures, continuing the dialogue initiated by the performance.

This work featured in IMAGINE IF THAT SAID…, a group exhibition of ten artists at Safehouse II in Peckham from 12th–15th May 2016. Curated by SPLEEN, the show brought together a diverse array of mediums, including painting, sculpture, video, performance, and printmaking.
